THE CHALLENGE

THE TASK

The main goal is to consolidate TravWell and Can I Eat This? into one simple functional app. The CDC wants to provide valuable travel information to travelers who want to stay healthy while abroad.

What is TravWell?

TravWell is a mobile app that helps you plan for a safe and healthy travel. It helps you build a destination specific vaccine recommendations, a checklist of what you need to do to prepare for travel, and have a healthy travel packing list.

What is Can I Eat This?

Help prevent travelers' diarrhea and other illnesses caused by unsafe eating conditions. After answering a few simple questions about the food you're eating, the app will tell you whether it is likely safe to eat.

THE SOLUTION

Create a ‘reference tool’ in the form of one single mobile app that incorporates the necessary information travelers need to stay safe, and provide users with a place to store personal travel information.

RESEARCH

UNDERSTANDING OUR USERS

From the beginning we wanted to know how safe people are when traveling for the first time or the tenth time. We wanted to learn their habits when preparing for travel and their risk factor when trying new things. We interviewed 20 people that helped generate a survey to send out.
From that, we got 30 participants which lead to 4 in-person interviews.

From our survey data and interviews we were able to come to 2 conclusions.

1. Most people didn't know that there was a CDC government website for travelers.

  • The word CDC immediately sounds boring.
  • Too much information on one page. It gets confusing.
  • To get answers to simple questions they had to take too many steps to get to the answer.
  • Once they found out there were apps to help them, they were curious.

2. Most people took big risks when trying new food abroad.

  • Even though people got sick from trying new foods. They still were willing to try new foods.
  • People knew the general rules of foods when traveling.

ITERATION #1

Here are a few screens and annotations from our first iteration.

INSIGHTS FROM ITERATION #1

  • We found after usability testing and critique that the bottom navigation bar was too confusing when trying to search by multiple countries.
  • There were too many steps and clicks to get to the answer. It wasn't a quick process.

ITERATION #2

TRIP PROFILE

The trip profile is the main hub for all the information the user can use to help plan for their trips. They can find all the vaccines, suggested lists, food and health tips and emergency numbers that they will need for that specific destination.

ALERTS

The first thing that you see in your trip profile is any important alerts that the country may have on high priority at the time.

VACCINES

For each vaccine needed to travel, the user can view which vaccines they need to stay updated on. They can also program their vaccine schedule to help them stay on track for those that need booster shots.

LISTS

The lists section comes with a standard to-do and packing list. However, the user can add items they may need as well.

TIPS

The tips section will give the user a quick overview of what they can and cannot eat and drink. Also, they can find tips about how to stay healthy while abroad.

EMERGENCY

In the Trips Profile, there is a section for Emergency which has the local numbers for Hospitals, Clinics, the Police, and the Embassy. These are available offline. If they want to find more locations they can click to open google maps to find multiple locations and directions.

NEXT STEPS

  1. Create high fidelity wireframes.
  2. Expand within government usability criteria.
  3. Creating alerts and reminders for vaccines and to-dos.
  4. Re-iterate based on usability testing.
